Analytical Chemist - Research Assistant

SUMMARY OF POSITION 

The Method Development and Analytical Services (MDAS) Research Assistant provides laboratory support and performs analytical testing supporting development of new pharmaceutical products.  The MDAS Research Assistant is an entry-level scientist receiving training, supervision, and hands-on experience performing testing for release, stability and product characterization.  The MDAS Research Assistant will work under the guidance of more experienced technical staff.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

The Research Assistant typically reports to a Group Leader, Manager or Director and receives training and supervision from more experienced technical staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the execution of the laboratory work necessary for commercialization of pharmaceutical products.
  • Performs hands-on laboratory bench work preparing solutions and processing samples for testing in accordance with approved procedures and methods.
  • Conducts laboratory work with high degree of accuracy and precision, including but not limited to, quantitative weighing, dilution, sample handling and processing.
  • Ensures all laboratory work is documented in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Performs and maintains labeling for solutions and samples and maintains an organized work space to ensure there is no chance of mix up.
  • Processes sample data to determine reported result.  Ensure results are reported appropriately in designated computerized systems and/or directly to stakeholders.
  • Reviews data to ensure conformance with specifications and trends.  Immediately reports unexpected data to laboratory management for further investigation.  
  • Complies with laboratory procedures and SOPs.  Follows written and verbal direction from senior chemists to execute tasks and develops skills and independence commensurate with training and experience.
  • Builds knowledge and prowess offered through training and guidance to increase manual skills and competence on instrumental analysis using HPLC, GC, dissolution, UV-visible spectrophotometry, Karl Fischer, and other techniques as required.
  • Performs administrative functions, materials sourcing, vendor inquiries, exploration of new technologies as required to effect rapid and efficient project progression.
  • Works efficiently, minimizing distractions and manages time to accomplish work by expected deadlines.   Provides regular reports on progress to leadership and during team meetings.
  • Work in compliance of all US and international regulatory agencies and compliance requirements as they relate to analytical testing.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and facility.  Performs laboratory housekeeping duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS in Chemistry or related science.
  • Academic knowledge of chemistry, mathematics and laboratory concepts.
  • Academic exposure and knowledge of the majority of the following: HPLC, GC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, titration and wet chemistry.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage and complete assigned projects on time.
  • Basic computer skills specifically in Microsoft Word, Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction.

GMP DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY

The Research Assistant has authority to perform work as assigned supporting the laboratory function.  This includes following approved procedure and guidance received from supervisors.
